My kids have been learning about their heritage for scouts (both boy and girl scouts).
You wouldn't think this is fascinating for them, but it is. We are related to kings, queens, outlaws, saints, gods, people you're supposed to kill on sight, legends--you name it.
Plus, they were astounded that the name Churchill is actually adopted as is my maiden name.
"Who the heck are we?" they ask. And we decided that we are who we are.
Here are some of the people they are excited to hear stories about in our family history:

William Brewster:
The separatist reverend of the Mayflower bunch.
What we like about him:
Robin Hood
What my kids like about him:
Clan MacGregor
Hey, what's not to like about "the children of the mist?" My kids particularly like that you could kill anyone claiming to be a MacGregor off and on for 200 years and those stubborn MacGregors are still here.
Sure, it's an adopted clan but hey, we like it.
The separatist reverend of the Mayflower bunch.
What we like about him:
- He did what he thought was right, even when it wasn't exactly legal.
- He brought a violet cloak and a box of books with him from England. (Yep, that sounds like us).
- Secretly printed books and pamphlets and distributed them.
- According to some accounts, he turned down being a political leader to focus on being the spiritual leader.
- He hid on the Mayflower and somehow evaded the British troops searching for him right before they sailed.
- When everyone else got very ill, William didn't. He and a couple of other healthy people worked day and night caring for the sick.
Robin Hood
Okay, okay, yes I know. However, one of the people who may have been Robin Hood is Robert, Earl of Huntingdon. So If there is a Robin Hood and he was Robert, well, he's our grandpa--not even an adopted one.
What my kids like about him:
- He was a rebel (I'm sensing a pattern here).
